Russ Weiner, PhD, AAPS President-Elect, is a globally recognized biopharmaceutical professional with over 30 years experience in drug development, personalized medicine, regulated bioanalysis, biomarker and companion diagnostics development. He is currently Head, Oncology and Cell Therapy Clinical Biomarker Sciences and Operations at Takeda Pharmaceuticals. In this role he is responsible for regulated bioanalysis in support of cellular kinetics and immunogenicity of cell therapies and biomarker assay development, validation and sample analysis for all oncology clinical programs.
Russ obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from Albany Medical College in NY. Prior to joining Takeda Russ was at the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute where he applied the skills gained in biopharma to develop therapeutics and vaccines in low- and middle-income countries. Here he focused on TB, malaria, diarrheal diseases, neonatal and children health.
Russ was the Head of Bioanalytical, Biomarker Analysis and Companion Diagnostics at Daiichi Sankyo, Head of Molecular Biomarkers and Companion Diagnostics at Merck, and Head of Bioanalytical and Biomarker Sciences at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Russ was directly involved with the submission of 30+ INDs supporting companywide therapeutic areas including, but not limited to, oncology, autoimmune diseases, organ transplantation and Alzheimer’s disease. He directly supported the development and approval of several oncology, immuno-oncology and immunomodulatory therapeutics including Erbitux®, Orencia®, Vanflyta®, Nulojix®, Yervoy®, Keytruda® and its associated PMA approved Dako PD-L1 IHC 22C3 pharmDx companion diagnostic assay.
Russ continues to be an active member the AAPS and is currently AAPS President-Elect. He has chaired the Biotech Section, was a Member-at-Large on the AAPS Board of Directors and has chaired the AAPS Annual Meeting. Russ is well known for his sense of humor and passion for employee and student mentorship. As an Adjunct Faculty of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy he often travels to the university to offer soft skills training, interview skill development and career advice.
